What do you really know about time management? Most of us have heard the phrase “time is money” or been told that we can be more productive if we learned to better manage our time. But what does this really mean and is time really ours to manage?
A great deal of our time is not really in our control at all. This makes time management seem like a daunting task.
The good news is that there are some simple time management activities that you can use on a daily basis to help you better manage your time, get more of your life under your control and be more productive with the time you have.
Here are some time management activities to consider:
Keep track of how you spend your time. Log it every 15 minutes so you can look back on it later and see what you are really doing with your time each day.
Leave things undone. This is much harder for some people than others but it’s true that there are many things we come across on our daily schedules that can be left for left or left for someone else to do. Sometimes you just have to leave something undone.
Practice the 80/20 principles. It’s believed that 80% of our results come from 20% of time and effort. You can look at your own life to see when you are getting the most results from your efforts. Spend more time working productively and less time doing things that won’t generate results.
Get help. There are some things that just can’t wait until later to be done. If you have too much to do than what you can handle on your own, get help. This could come from family, friends, and roommates or even hired help if you need it. But don’t try to be super-human and do everything yourself.
Skip the news. Read headlines online instead. Skip other television shows that are pointless and take up your time from doing other important things. If you really like TV, limit yourself to one or two favorite programs and watch these only in your downtime to relax. Don’t allow them to distract you during the day.
If you’re looking to improve your own time management, these time management activities are something you can start right away- today even. You can begin making real changes to improve your productivity and get more done in a day.
These time management activities can help you do just that.
