7 Positions for Meditation

7 Positions for Meditation

During the ancient times until now, people practice meditation because of its provided advantages. In all this time a view positions for meditation are developed. Here I show the most used ones. Incorporating meditation as part of your daily life can make a big difference regarding your attitude and perception in life. But because meditation is a procedure, it involves several steps as well as postures when doing it.

1. Cross legged posture.

Various spiritual traditions and meditation teachers suggest or prescribe various meditation physical postures. One of the most popular postures is the cross legged position which includes the lotus position. It is taught in most meditative traditions that the spinal cord must be kept straight. So, slouching is not a good idea. This is because, when you sit straight, it encourages good circulation of what they call as spiritual energy, which is the life force and vital breath.

2. Seated posture.

You can sit on the chair with his or her bare feet, as what the New Thought is teaching. In Orthodox Christianity method, you can sit on the stool. You sit up keeping your back straight holding the spine and head in alignment without leaning and the thighs are parallel to the floor. The hands are rested comfortably on the arm’s chair or on the knees.

3. In the kneeling posture,

you kneel with both knees on the floor keeping your buttocks resting on your toes and heels which are almost touching. The hands rest on your thighs.

4. Lying down posture

also known as corpse posture or savasna in yoga. You rest on the carpet keeping your legs straight and relaxed. Nevertheless, this is not used more often since it mimics the natural posture of sleeping. You can sometimes fall asleep. This is effective in reducing stress rather than a meditation.

5. Incorporating mudras or hand gestures.

There is a theological meaning behind these gestures. Based on Yogic philosophy, these can affect consciousness. One example is the common hand-position of the Buddhist. The right hand rests on the top of the left hand with touching thumbs similar to the begging bowl of Buddha.

6. While in Theravada Buddhism, you are walking in mindfulness.

In Sukhothai, Thailand, walking meditation of the monks is called bas-relief. Walking in mindfulness can bring you somewhere

7. Incorporating various repetitive activities in stillness such as humming, chanting,

or deep breathing to help in inducing a state of meditation. The Soto Zen practitioners do their meditation in front of a wall with open eyes. However, most mediation schools are assuming that the eyes are half-open or closed.

The duration and frequency of meditation also vary. There are nuns and monks who vow for a lifetime meditation. In our day to day life however, the broadly accepted duration is 20 or 30 minutes. This length may increase as the process goes on as you reveal more and better experience. To obtain the benefits of meditation, it is advisable to follow the advices and instructions of a spiritual teacher. Most habits work when you practice daily. But do not feel guilty when you fail to do so, what is the complete opposite of what we are trying to accomplish. Sometimes, you complain about your knees especially during a kneeling meditation on or sitting with legs crossed.

Keep in mind that perseverance and acceptance are needed to become successful in any skill. This can help you during prolonged hours of meditation and increase focus on your everyday live.

So, which one works for you? Tell us in the comments below.

Meditation technique for a beginner

Beginner Meditation

Beginner Meditation
In the fast and busy pace of life, we tend to lose focus on the more simple things. And because of the self inflicted needs that we are trying to meet, we tend to neglect the importance of peace of mind. The lack of his quietness  makes a person feel overwhelmed , exhausted and unfulfilled no matter how much goals are achieved. This is the primary concern of meditation. It allows the person to watch the flow of his thoughts as he retires to the dictates of his senses. And more significantly, it provides new energy in the monotony of the daily routine.

Meditation is something that can not hurt be one of your daily habits. In its simplest form, there is satisfaction and renewal of your mind to a more vigorous and active one. With the little time that meditation requires, you learn more about yourself. This understanding can even lead you to promising achievements especially in the field of socialization. While you learn to focus and concentrate, meditation gives a clearer sense of direction.

For staring meditators, here is a simple meditation technique that will nurture your consciousness to the realms that go beyond the scientific domain. This is the way out to convolution and exhaustion.

The first step in this meditation technique for a beginner is to find a quiet and comfortable place to reflect on. Sit in a comfortable position. You can cross-leg in a carpet or sit in a chair. The exact position of meditation doesn’t matter, as long as this makes you feel relaxed and focused. Then gently close your eyes. This is an essential technique of shutting yourself from the world. Closing the eyes directs the attention to the internal awareness, the main goal of meditation. It is because the sense of seeing greatly consumes the energy which in turn takes away the sense of focus. In other techniques, there are also open-eyed meditations. However, the efficacy of those can be low compared to closed-eyed meditations.

Relax. This is another important factor when meditating. Watch the space and the darkness. Put your attention to the flow of your thoughts that passes your mind. Watch how these thoughts rise and fall. This time, your subconscious becomes more vibrant and aware.

Repeat the mantra. This will keep you focused. An effective mantra that goes along the internal consciousness is the Sanskrit Sloka, amaram hum madhuram hum. This means “I am immortal, I am blissful”. The space which you are looking into is reigned by the Knower. The Knower of the space is characterized by immortality and bliss.

After the meditation, rub your two hands and give warmth to your face. This will help you return to your other activities. Do this meditation for at least ten minutes, twice a day. Preferably, at the start and in the end of the day recharge your spirit through meditation. This is also helpful to alleviate your worries and get you ready to more challenges of life. If you practice process of meditation on a regular base, observe how it changes your life, perception and feeling of purpose.

Meditation for Stress Relief

Meditation for Stress Relief The word “meditation” simply means to be in a continuous state of contemplation, or think about an action or event. Everyone experiences different forms of stress. Some are stressed by job pressures, relationships, children, and most commonly, finances. Taking time every day to meditate, in the way that works best for you, to relieve the stress you’re experiencing. Worrying about a difficult situation will not solve the problem, and will not take away the upsetting emotions you’re experiencing.

You may find it ridiculous to take time for meditation when you already have a busy schedule. However, meditation will make you calm enough to relax and talk about the situation that is bothering you so that you can come up with a solution. Sitting in a warm bubble bath is an ideal way to meditate. If you don’t have time for a bubble bath right away, go outside for a few minutes and take a deep breath or two to clear your head. Bath time can be reserved for when you have an hour or so to meditate.

If your children are causing you stress, breathing exercises can be helpful, as it can be easy to get upset when children are hyperactive. Allow your kids to go outside to play or watch a movie so that you can get your thoughts together and calm your nerves. Breathe in and out, slowly, and think about the choices you have to remedy the situation that is upsetting you. When you’re caring for children, as well as maintaining a job and a relationship, meditation is practically a must.

Find a method of meditation that works for you. Even if you can only meditate for a few minutes, those are minutes you can spend stress-free. If you don’t want to search the Internet to find relaxation techniques, search for material at your local library. The library is quiet and relaxing, so you can easily find a few books that will offer you with valuable information about meditation.

It’s also a good idea to take notes on the meditation books you read. Check out the books that talk about different methods of meditation, and write down the passages or interests that you find most interesting. Even if you start your meditation practice with learning how to accomplish peace of mind, you’re making a step in the right direction. After you have peace of mind, you can start working on the things that have left you with negative feelings and emptiness. Keep in mind that you can have the life you desire if you learn how to properly meditate. You can find your life’s fulfillment and be a positive influence in the lives of others who are also dealing with life’s pressures.

Whether you relax and meditate through books, tapes or exercises, you’ll discover that when your life is stress-free, your mind is free to come up with solutions to stressful problems. You can search online for helpful meditation tapes. This will help you not to feel miserable inside day after day. Meditation will also help you find your purpose.

Remember you’re using your thoughts as a means to meditate, so you’ll need to clear your mind of all negative thoughts and feelings. This will help you to make improvements to your life and set positive goals for yourself. Taking time to relax and think about the events in your life, you’ll be at ease enough to meditate and find solutions to challenges in your life.

What Are The Origins of Meditation?

Origin_of _Meditation
Meditation is something that has been around for ages literally. Even though there are no documented records for proof of the exact date, a lot of ancient civilizations did become known for being practitioners of the art of meditation that is practiced today by so many. So where are the origins of meditation?

India is mainly the most prominent of all countries, which is known for being the user of meditation, more so as a organized practice. For several centuries, there have been a number of Hindi scholars that have written about the subject of meditation, and what they have written on did range from exactly how to do it to the benefits that go along with it. Two of the very best known of all Hindi texts on meditation were no other than the Vedas and the Yogas Sutras by Patanjali.

However, without a doubt, it cannot be disputed that one of the most influential of all people in the world of meditation is no other than Siddharta Gautama. Siddharta Gautama was also known by the name of Buddha. During the period of 500 BC, he was able to achieve great enlightenment by practicing meditation, and his influence spread greatly over Asia and the rest of the world.

It’s very true that the East had been practicing the art of meditation long before the West did, and the West didn’t pick up on meditation, until a long while later. It wasn’t until the middle of the twentieth century when the Western World did adopt meditation and make it popular as a practice in their lives.

Today, there are tons of meditation centers, as well as organizations popping up all over the West. Meditation is something that has successfully intertwined itself with lots of religious practices. However, in the West, these meditation centers and organizations don’t have that spiritual aspect at all, something which is very sad. Westerners do tend to put their focus on the health benefits more so than anything else. This is because of the fast paced reality of the world today.

Nonetheless, even though there is a loss from the spiritual side of meditation, it is still highly recognized for its rewards where people’s mental health well being is concerned. This is, and still manages to be, one of the top aspects when it comes to meditation.

A Little Introduction To Meditation

An introduction to meditation
Here’s the start of a series about meditation. It should help you start thinking about meditating, or take you to the next level. It only makes sense that we start with an introduction to meditating first.

Today’s world is a place that is filled with lots of busy and hustle and bustle. There are things that take place very fast, and sometimes, we don’t get enough time to react to them properly. We don’t seem to think things over carefully and tend to go more for decisions that are made to quick.

This is not the way things should be, to be honest, and each of us do need to slow down more and be calm. If we don’t, stress will definitely build up, and then it will affect in the way we treat people. This is something that does apply to both home and the workplace.

Meditation is a practice that helps people to be still for a while, and it something that allows the mind to focus. so it can get very calm and be able to handle the pressures that go along with living life daily.

A lot of people do think that meditation is a form of religious practice, but in actuality it is not, despite the fact that a lot of religions do incorporate elements of it as part of their practice. There are lots of people out there who aren’t religious and they get into meditation regularly.

The reasons that people do practice meditation are various. It is true that some people do meditate to relieve themselves of stress and to feel peaceful. However, many do use it strictly for health reasons, and also because they want to get a much higher level of consciousness amid others.

Therefore, if you do believe that life is plaguing you with stress, it is most probably a signal for you to slow things down somewhat. You mind is without a doubt very distracted, as you have far too many things to think about, and it is meditation that can help calm you down and help to set the stress and worries free. If mediation could have one descriptive SEO word, it would definitely be defined as happiness, because it does bring a smile to the heart and mind.

As mentioned above, the hectic lifestyle people live in today, you have to consider that a stressful lifestyle is bad for your health. Researchers have found that stress contributes to heart diseases and high blood pressure. You have to consider that because of the help of this kind of lifestyle that people live in today, stroke and heart diseases have been considered as one of the deadliest diseases plaguing today’s society.

This is why you should learn how to relax and take good care of your body. You also need to consider that your body needs rest from time to time. It cannot handle too much work for too long. If your body is shouting out that you have had enough workload and is saying that it is tired, it probably is. With 5 minutes of relaxation, you can re-energize your body and get it ready for another batch of work.

Although physical exercising can also help in preventing heart diseases, you have to realize that it is just not enough. You also need rest and relaxation. Besides, if you are stressed out, you won’t be able to work at your peak efficiency. Your brain function is also overwhelmed by stress and you will not be able to think clearly if you are stressed out. This is why you need to relax. Besides, what’s the point of working if your brain and body don’t function orderly?

One of the most helpful ways to relax is through meditation. Although meditation have been practiced thousands of years ago, you have to consider that recent studies have found and has proof that meditation can indeed relieve stress and give you that extra boost of energy you need.

Meditations can completely relax your body and mind and it can also make your brain more alert and make your heart relax. Meditation can completely make you feel refreshed and get you ready for another batch of work. It can also help you block out any distractions that may come across your way.

First of all, there are different kinds of meditations available today. One of the most popular forms of meditation is the Buddhist meditation. You have to consider that Buddhist meditation offers great forms of relaxation. This particular meditation only requires you to go into a locked quiet room. Inside the room you will begin meditation by sitting down, closing your eyes and get rid of all the thoughts running inside your head. Do this for a few minutes and you will be able to get back up with your mind and body feeling refreshed.

Although the so-called “power naps” can also offer this kind of feeling, you have to keep in mind that meditation is more effective than a five-minute nap.

Meditation was first taught as part of a religious practice in the Buddhist religion. However, meditation is now accepted as part of the western culture and many people, particularly busy people, are now practicing meditation in order to get their mind and body to relax. If you want to learn how to meditate, keep following this site on how to meditate properly. You will also learn the different kinds of meditation.

On advanced levels, some schools can even teach you how to meditate while you are working.

Sex, Economics and Happiness

EconomicsMoney can buy the sexual act but it cannot buy love or happiness. In one study conducted which used a random sampling of 1600 Americans there was a strong relation between happiness and sex. The same study also indicated that one’s economic status did not determine a person having more sex or partners if one had more money. The study concluded that the typical American had sexual relations as in intercourse 2 to 3 times a month. It also showed that married couples that are monogamous have more sex than single people.

Another study was conducted by two economists David G. Blanchflower and Andrew J. Oswald of the National Bureau of Economic Research and printed in paper # 10499 Issued in May 2004. Their findings included a correlation between education, economical earnings and sex. First and foremost they found that those with higher education were happier with having sex in general. They also concluded that people were happiest with just one partner on a steady basis. An interesting find in this study was that those that increased their sexual activity from once a month to once a week raised their happiness levels to the economic equivalent of getting a $50,000 dollar year raise.

These finding do not mean that one does not like money in their lives to help them live better and easier. Better and easier always is good. What is saying that people are happier with a good sexual relationship with one person over money. Another interesting find with this study was that having more money did not necessarily mean one was having more sex either. What the study did find was that people with higher education do tend to make more money and those with more money and education seemed to be made happier by sex.

The studied also concluded that those happiest and getting the most sex were those who were in long term monogamous marriages. Those married couples are getting sex 30 percent more than the average single person. In terms of dollars; a happy lasting marriage generates about $100,000 dollars worth of happiness a year. They also found that those couples that divorced had a decrease in happiness equivalent monetarily to $66,000 dollars less in happiness.

The other aspect to the sexual equation and being happy was having a loving relationship that included frequent touching in addition to sex. It was found that people who have sex without an emotional connection many times feel worse than before the encounter. They tend to suffer from feeling bad, depression and emptiness after meaningless sex. Touch also plays a very important part in the happiness aspect. People need a minimum of 4 hugs a day to thrive and be happy. Old people and babies who don’t have people that touch them die quicker than those that do. So in conclusion having a loving sexual relationship will make you happier than money alone. And the touch of a human is priceless.

The Happiness Equation

Happiness_3There are some things that we can do to help make us happy. Happiness for the most part is a state of mind that our bodies reinforce. When we are happy our bodies produce biochemicals to help us maintain our happy mood. There are general things that regardless of where we live in the world we all recognize as components of happiness. How we promote our personal happiness is subjective based on what we personally feel happiness is to us.

Besides our personality factors; studies have shown that the aspects that we can control in our lives to be happy play about 10 to 15 percent of the happiness equation. Things that go into this percentage category include ; economics, education and looks among other things. These things we do have some kind of control over even if it’s just marginal. And when we reinforce these things positively in ourselves they increase our sense of happiness.

In terms of economics, it is apparent that those with money in general are happier that those that are poor. It’s a no brainer to know that when you have ample funds you have more free time to enjoy your spare time. When you have money you can pay for things to enhance your happiness as well as activities that make you happy. People with money don’t have to worry about a roof over their heads, food in their stomachs and their families, nor things like warm clothes in the winter. Poverty is not a happy state to be in especially in a country where everything is based on a dollar value. With that being said, there are those with money who still are not happy. They need drugs and alcohol to stimulate a happy mood. Money still does not buy real love or real friends.

Worldwide the things people find as a source of happiness are love, sex and doing activities like listening to their favorite music. These things have nothing to do with finances. It is also found that doing happy activities like watching a comedy or a funny activity makes one happy for that time. Funny shows and activities; these types of things don’t create a lasting happiness.

It is suggested to create that 10 to 15 percent people need to keep themselves happy. Things one can do for that percentage is developing good social skills, getting married or living together with their significant other and having a life that is meaningful and purposeful to them. When you have good social skills you can make and keep friends. Research shows that those that are married or in a loving committed living together situation have 30% more quality sex that is enjoyed than their single counterparts. When we have a life that we feel is meaningful and has a purpose to us it makes us feel good. When we have a meaningful life we feel good about ourselves and that makes us feel that people feel good about what we are doing as well. Finally regardless of our circumstances if we can have some kind of positivity to draw from to keep us going daily we can create even a little happiness which can help go a long way.

Theories On The Origins Of Happiness

Happiness_2There are two basic notions about where happiness stems from. One idea is that happiness comes from things outside of ourselves. In this case happiness comes from external sources like prosperity. These people do not view happiness as an emotion that emanates from within ourselves. The other premise is that happiness starts with us on the inside. How we feel and view our lives is what promotes the beginning of our happiness. It is felt with this idea that if you are not happy inside within yourself first how can you be happy with anything else.

We find that some religious and philosophical thinkers view happiness as a state of being resulting from having what is considered a 揼ood life? It’s safe to say what one thinks is a good life is what is the essence of happiness. People who view happiness this way tend to see happiness as a state in which we experience things in abundance and doing well. Other religious and philosophical thinkers however do feel that happiness stems from an internal state of being. They feel that without it coming from our psyche’s first; happiness cannot manifest for us in the world.

Now psychologists theorize that happiness is based on one’s state of mind. If one’s mind is positive and we function as such we tend to have happiness in our lives. They also believe that if we are negative in mindset and don’t function at our best we will not happy in our lives. Science also believes that happiness manifests because our biological reactions chemically in the body induce the state of happiness.

It is hard to pinpoint exact causes of happiness because happiness is relative to each person. Happiness is based on their perception of what happiness is and means to them personally. What there is a consensus about is the fact that regardless of where one is in the world; there are some general characteristics of happiness that are universal in nature. It seems that regardless of where a person lives in the world everyone agrees that being happy is based on positive emotions. Those emotions spread from the person into their life based on the person’s cultural and social definition of happiness. The three characteristics that everyone universally agrees is a factor of happiness without dispute is pleasure, engagement and having a life that is considered purposeful.

What this means is that regardless of what the pleasure is as defined socially and culturally by a person everyone wants some form pleasure to be happy . In terms of engagement humans by nature are social creatures and need other human contact and relationships to thrive. People also have to feel their life is worth something and that their life is meaningful by standards of their society to make them feel worthwhile. Without these three ingredients its hard for a person to have happiness.

What is Happiness

Happiness
When we think of happiness, it conjures up different ideas our minds and feelings as well. For some people it means one thing and to others something else. Happiness is a personal thing to each person and what they define it to be according to their lives. What you may perceive to be as happiness may actually be disturbing and a source of unhappiness to another.

Basically how one views happiness is based one’s life, values and lifestyle. Our perception of happiness for others may not be how they perceive it for themselves. If you believe going to parties makes your happy it may do so for you but not necessarily your friend. Your friend may actually prefer to stay home and watch movies for happiness. No one can dictate to another what they should do for their happiness. The exception would be a person who derives their happiness from physically or emotionally harming other people that don’t want to be hurt. No one has the right to harm another for happiness when the other does not consent to it. And if the person consents out of fear then thats not free will either. That is self preservation. Even self destructive people under the guise of happiness who only harm themselves have a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional.

By definition happiness is defined as a state of mind and being. This state includes a feelings of being content, love, satisfaction, joy and or pleasure. This definition does not include people who harm either themselves or others in the name of happiness. First of all, if one harms another person either physically or mentally for no good reason and the other person is not consenting to it there is something really wrong with that picture. Normal people do not consent to being abused or hurt either physically or emotionally. In this case the person doing the hurting has a serious problem and their definition of happiness is definitely distorted to say the least. In this case the person who has an obvious problem needs immediate help either from a professional or a law enforcer. This is even more serious if the other party they are inflicting harm on is not a consenting adult. This persons behavior needs to be addressed immediately they are a danger under the guise of happiness.

It is hard to exact the attributes of happiness because they are socially and culturally defined. Happiness is interpreted by people based on where they live in the world. An example would be going to the beach in some parts of the world and other parts going skiing. Despite location there are some universal characteristics of happiness. It is the Universal consensus that happiness is indeed premised on the idea of having positive emotions. The same positive emotions permeate the person beings and reflects in their life as such. Throughout the world people agree on these three things as the foundation of happiness; pleasure, engagement and having a life that is meaningful with purpose by their definition. It is a unanimous idea that we all need to feel pleasure, be engaged and interact with others and have a life that we feel is worthwhile to be happy.
